For centuries, dance and song have played a key role in both celebrations and revolutions.
We dance at weddings. We sing for justice. And in between, all humanity sings and dances to celebrate, commiserate and to express the full range of human emotion.
Folk dance and music, in all of its forms and colors, tell the story of humanity, of our history and of our hopes.
The dances and songs of our ancestors also provide a way to connect with those who came before us and paved the way.
It is this cultural heritage, this aspect of humanity, this call to social justice we seek to preserve and promote.
Every 14 days a human language and its culture vanishes from the face of the earth. We have the tools to capture and safeguard our cultural heritage—the dance and music (vocal and instrumental) of our world cultures.
Since 2004, student videographers from San Francisco State have traveled with America’s Folk Ambassadors—Clog America to festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The partnership has resulted in an enviable library of documentaries while providing SF State students with unforgettable life learning. In Summer 2018, students from SF State will also travel to South Africa and Zimbabwe to learn and record the dance and music of the people AND to share the branch of American folk heritage known as Gospel. Broader financial support is needed to continue and expand this unique cultural work.
